Indubitably, all the web browsers are racing up to achieve a certain level for the user to make it fast and secure for them, even it is by optimizing browser engine or by adding certain tools or extensions in the browser. But to us, it seems that every web browser has similar speed and performance as it is because it depends upon the user and how he uses the program. The web browser speed and performance age quickly as we use them because of the perpetual amount of data that we never bothered to clear.
Just like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox also provide add-on and extension for the browser to enhance the speed and performance but our focus is more on the manipulating the built-in feature. Apart from the data stored in the browser, there are some built-in features that also affects the speed and performance of the Firefox. So, in this article, I will walk you through some simple tweaks to speed up Firefox immediately.
Before starting with the guide, make sure that you are using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. The version mentioned in this article is Firefox Quantum 64.0.
So, let’s start with the guide.
Tip 1: Modify Performance Settings
Open up your Firefox browser and click on the overflow menu from the right top corner as highlighted above, this will drop down menu as shown above. From the menu click on the Options button.
This will open up about:preferences on your browser as shown above. From the about:preferences pane, click on the General tab from the navigation menu as highlighted above. Now scroll down till you see Performance settings as highlighted above.
From the Performance settings, uncheck the “Use recommended performance settings” checkbox, this will enable the “Use hardware acceleration when available” option, make sure to checkmark the option as shown above and let the Content process limit to set as default.
Now restart the Firefox browser.
Tip 2: Modify Firefox Data collection and use
From the about:preferences window, click on the Privacy & Security option under the navigation menu as highlighted above.
Firefox browser continuously collects data about the browser which makes it slow down, you can disable this feature by modifying data collection settings. From Privacy & Security, scroll down till you find “Firefox Data Collection and Use” settings as shown above. Now make sure to uncheck all the boxes under the settings as highlighted above. Don’t worry, this will not compromise your security and privacy.
Now restart your Firefox browser.
Tip 3: Modify Built-in Configurations
Open up a new tab on your Firefox browser and type in “about:config” on the URL address bar as highlighted above and hit Enter.
If you receive a warning message, click on the “I accept the risk!” button as highlighted above. This will open up a list of browser configurations.
In the Search bar, type in “telemetry” and hit enter, now double-click on the Preference name as highlighted above to change its value to false. Now also change the Value of the following preferences listed below:
- Set browser.download.animateNotifications to False
- Set security.dialog_enable_delay to 0
- Set network.prefetch-next to False (Only on slow internet connections)
- Set browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.telemetry to false
- Set browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.telemetry to false
- Set browser.ping-centre.telemetry to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.archive.enabled to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.bhrPing.enabled to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.enabled to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.firstShutdownPing.enabled to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.hybridContent.enabled to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.newProfilePing.enabled to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.reportingpolicy.firstRun to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.shutdownPingSender.enabled to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.unified to false
- Set toolkit.telemetry.updatePing.enabled to false
When you modify the values of above preferences then you will restart your browser to experience the change in its performance and speed as you have now disabled the unwanted animations on the browser, stopped preloading of web pages if the internet connection is low and disabled the countdown timer when installing extensions on the browsers.
Tip 4: Modify Permissions Settings
From about:preferences (Options), click on the Privacy & Security under the navigation menu as highlighted above. Now, scroll down till you find Permissions settings as shown above. Now make sure to check the checkbox of “accessibility services” as highlighted above, this will pop up a message to restart Firefox, click on Restart Firefox now to apply changes.
Tip 5: Disable Built-in Add-ons
To remove unnecessary add-ons, type-in “about:config” in the URL address bar as shown above and accept the risk from the warning message.
From the search bar, type-in reader and disable the values of both add-ons as highlighted above. For more unnecessary add-ons change the value of the add-ons listed below:
- In about:config, set browser.pocket.enabled to False
- In about:config, set loop.enabled to False
After modifying values of add-ons, restart Firefox to apply changes.
Tip 6: Refresh Firefox
If you want your Firefox browser to run as fast as it ran when you first installed it on your PC, then you have to refresh your Firefox browser.
In order to refresh Firefox, type in “about:support” in the browser’s URL address bar as highlighted above.
Next to Troubleshooting Information you can see the option of “Give Firefox a tune up” and under the option is the button for Refresh Firefox, click on the Refresh Firefox button as highlighted above.
A prompt message will pop up asking you that refreshing Firefox will remove any installed add-ons and customizations and will also reset the browser settings to its default state as shown above. Simply click on the Refresh Firefox button to apply changes as highlighted above.
