The idea behind Composer is inspired by Node.js NPM and Ruby’s bundler, if you are not familiar with them then you should just need to know that Composer is a dependency management tool for PHP, which allows a developer to use libraries and packages needed for a particular project for which Composer will automatically install and update by declaring the libraries and by finding out the versions of packages needed, but by default it does not install anything globally. If you’re working with PHP using WAMP then it is essential to use Composer for your project. So in this article, I will guide you how to install Composer in Windows 10.

Before you start, there are some requirements that you should preserve before installing Composer on Windows 10.

  • Make sure you have the updated version of Windows 10.
  • Make sure you have WAMP or XAMPP installed on your PC.
  • Make sure that PHP version installed on your Windows is 5.3.2 or above.

Now let’s start with the by step guide.

Step 1: Download Composer Setup

Download Composer

Open up a browser and go to https://getcomposer.org/download/ as shown above. Now click on the Composer-Setup.exe link as highlighted above.

Warning Message

If you’re using Chrome then you’ll receive a warning message before the download could install. Click on the Keep button as shown above.

Step 2: Run Composer Setup

After successful download, head to the downloaded folder and open up the setup file as shown above.

Installation option phase

In the Composer Setup wizard, under Installation Options, make sure to uncheck the checkbox of Developer mode as highlighted above. Now click on the Next > button to proceed.

Under Setting Check phase, you can see that composer locating where PHP has been installed in your Windows, in my case I have installed WAMP on C:\ drive and in the URL directory you can check your PHP version installed as highlighted above.

Now just click Next> to proceed.

Proxy Settings phase

In the Proxy Settings phase, make sure to uncheck the checkbox of “Use a proxy server to connect to internet” if you’re not using the proxy server, for this you don’t need to Enter proxy URL as shown above. Now just click on the Next> button.

Step 3: Composer Installation Process

Ready to install phase

In the Ready to install phase, just click on the Install button as shown above.

Information phase

After the successful installation, read the highlighted steps under the Information phase. Now click on Next> button to proceed.

Completing Composer setup phase

Just click on the Finish button to close the setup windows as shown above.

Step 4: Check Composer Installation

Open Command Prompt

To check if the composer has successfully installed on your Windows, Search for Command Prompt from the windows search as shown above. Now click on the Command Prompt to open up Command Prompt terminal as highlighted above.

Checking composer installation

In the Command Prompt window, just type in the command “composer” as highlighted above. This will show you the composer version installed on your Windows. If you get the same result as shown above then you have successfully installed Composer in your Windows 10.

Note: If you didn’t get the same result then simply restart your Windows and apply the above step again.
