In this article, I will guide you about how to clear app cache or clear app data on your Android devices. You might have come across a situation where you have found a problem in any of your Android’s app or software and for its solution, people may have advised you to clear app data or clear app cache of your Android device. Now, what’s the difference between these seemingly related operations? So, let me enlighten you with the difference between these two operations and when you really need to clear when.

What is App Cache?

Cache is a memory which contains temporary data of an application that is stored in a dedicated memory in your Android device known as App Cache. The App cache helps to store the data of opened Apps data that will help to quickly re-launch that app. But if the app cache is full, your device starts to lag a bit which acquires a clearing of piled up apps cache to free up memory for other apps on your device. So, we know that,

  • Cache is a temporary memory
  • Cache stores app data
  • Cache helps in re-launching apps quickly.

What is App data?

App data is the information or the data that has been taken from the user for a particular application. It has all the user-defined files, settings, accounts, updated and other user-defined preferences of an application. After clearing app data these files are deleted and your application is restored to the state when you first downloaded and installed it on your device. This operation is required if a particular app is malfunctioning because of some bugs and errors. So we know that,

  • App data has the user-defined information
  • Clearing app data will reset application to its default state

Now you know their difference, let’s start with a stepwise guide on how to clear app cache and clear app data.

Step 1: Open Settings Menu

Go to the Settings menu from your app drawer as shown above.

Step 2: Clearing overall app Cache

There are two ways to clear up your app cache, first way guides you to clear the cache for all apps from your Android device. Second way guides you to clear the cache of a particular app.

After Settings Menu opens up, scroll through till you find Storage option, as shown above, tap on Storage option to proceed.

Now, tap on the Internal shared storage under your Storage settings as shown above.

Now you can see your device calculating the cache data as shown above.

You can see the total amount of cached data on the most right of your screen as highlighted above. Now tap on the Cached data option to clear the overall data of the app cache.

After clicking on cached data, a pop up will appear asking you to clear cached data for all apps as shown above. Click on OK proceed.

Now you can see your cached data has been cleared as shown above.

Step 3: Clearing the desired app cache

Open Setting Menu and scroll down till you find Apps option.

Tap on Apps option (as highlighted above) to proceed.

Select any desired app you want to clear the cache of.

Now, tap on the Storage option as shown above.

Now tap on the CLEAR CACHE option, as shown above, a pop up will appear tap on OK to clear apps cache.

Step 4: Clearing App Data

Open Setting Menu and scroll down till you find Apps option.

Tap on Apps option (as highlighted above) to proceed.

Select any desired app you want to clear the cache of.

Now, tap on the Storage option as shown above.

Now tap on the CLEAR DATA option as shown above.

A pop up will appear, as shown above, asking you Delete app data? Tap on OK to clear app data.
