To Change file association of certain file then simply right click on a particular file, hover the mouse pointer over the Open with option in the contextual menu, this will cascade another menu from where you can see a list of apps and other options. If you select a particular app from the list then it will only open the file in the specific app for once but our need here is to change the file association permanently so you have to click on the “Choose another app” option as highlighted above.

From the “Choose another app” option, a dialog box will pop up as shown above. In the dialog box, you will be asked how to open the file? With a list of apps in the “Other options” section. Simply click to select the preferred option from the list and make sure to checkmark the “Always use this app to open .(extension) files” checkbox as highlighted above. Now simply click OK button to apply the changes. Now your files with the particular extension will now only be opened from the specified application in the future until you decide to change it again.

To open Windows settings, click to open up the Windows Start menu, as shown above, from the Start menu click on the Settings icon as highlighted.

From the Windows Settings, click on the Apps option as highlighted above.

In the Apps Settings, click on the Default apps option from the navigation menu as highlighted above. In Default apps section you can see segments of features listed of which you can change the default apps.

Click on any of the file feature, this will pop up a dialog box as shown above, simply select the preferred app from the list. This will now open up the associated files to specific feature with the selected app.

From Windows Apps settings, under Default apps section, click on the “Choose default apps by file type” option as highlighted above.

In Choose default apps by file type settings, you can see the column of listed file type and a column of Choose a default app against each option as shown above. Simply find the specific extension of the file from the first column and click the option on the second column against it in order to change the app. A pop up a dialog box from which you can select the preferred app from the list as highlighted above. This will select the specified app for the particular file type.

Reset all file associations

In order to reset all the file associations to bring it back to the state when Windows 10 used to open it with its default assigned apps. In Windows Apps Settings, under Default apps section you can see a Reset button as highlighted above, which state you that it will reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults app. Simply, click on the button to Reset all file associations.
